Entrepreneur's journey: From Panthers to finance to nonprofits
Cliff Viner, former owner of the Florida Panthers National Hockey League franchise, and his wife Eda created the non-profit Eda and Cliff Viner Community Scholars Foundation in 2015.
This year the foundation has 100 graduates of Delray Beach and Boca Raton high schools attending 10 state colleges and universities on its four-year scholarships.
The scholarships average about $7,000 per year per student.
The couple were married for five years when they decided to start a project together to make a significant, but local impact, Viner said.
“We agreed on college scholarships as a powerful and impactful mission,” Viner said.
“Eda, based on her own history, originally wanted a program to help single-parent families. We found the need was great even in two-parent families, and so we created our Community Scholars program here in Boca and Delray.
“The needs and challenges here are enormous, as evidence by the skyrocketin
