Junious Norfleet was the youngest of the Norfleet Brothers, a gospel singing group that was a staple of the long-running “Jubilee Showcase” TV show on Sunday mornings.
Mr.
Norfleet, 82, died Tuesday, March 25, of complications from a Feb. 17 stroke in Integrated Health Services-Brentwood in Burbank, said his wife, Janet.
A tenor, Mr. Norfleet shared lead singing duties in the group. Songs on which he was featured include “Through it All” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” His favorite was “Wade in the Water,” his wife said.
The group rose to prominence in the 1950s with a traditional four-part harmony gospel sound backed by guitar.
The group maintained this structure even as gospel moved toward heavier instrumentation and more shout-style singing, said Bob Marovich, who is writing a history of gospel in Chicago.
