Subrahmanya Iyer was born in a great musical family of Tiruvayaru.

He has a galaxy of students, among whom Mysore Vasudevachar and Tiger Varadacharya have become very famous. He came to be known as Patnam Subrahmanya Iyer due to his stay in Chenna Patnam.
